A Commitment to Community
Saint Agnes Healthcare has a long history of meeting the health needs of our community. The Health Institute presents an exciting new structure focused on partnering with our community to keep them at their best health. Bringing together community engagement and care management resources, we strive to be as relevant to our community when they are well as when they are sick.
The Health Institute is guided by our Mission to serve all persons, particularly those that are most vulnerable, and to provide healthcare that leaves no one behind. We know that many other factors contribute to the health of our community beyond traditional healthcare. With greater care coordination, the Health Institute will connect patients to the services, physicians, organizations and resources where and when they need it most.
Our work will focus on three primary areas: Community Health, Community Engagement and Population Health. The Health Institute will continue to evolve as new needs are identified, and partnerships are formed to meet the demands of a healthy community.

Our Heart Team Fights a Killer
According to the American Heart Association, heart disease is the number one cause of death in America. In fact, 50% of women in the U.S. suffer from heart disease, and many don’t even know they have it. Fortunately, some forms of heart disease are preventable, and a heart-healthy diet, regular exercise and avoiding smoking can go a long way to help prevent the disease.
At Saint Agnes Hospital, the acclaimed Cardiovascular Institute is an example of healthcare experts tackling this knowledge vacuum and furthering the hospital’s leadership in cardiovascular care with new comprehensive services and programs.
Our cardiovascular team is among the best in Maryland at rapidly treating cardiac and vascular emergencies as well as more subtle diseases that develop over time, such as arteriosclerosis, coronary heart disease, varicose veins and other venous diseases. Most importantly, all of our physicians are deeply committed to a multidisciplinary approach to determine the most effective treatment for each individual patient.
Daughters of Charity
The Saint Agnes mission defines our commitment to serving all persons with special attention to those who are poor and vulnerable. Staying true to that mission, the Saint Agnes Foundation created a fund to support our community and internal team. The Daughters of Charity fund, named after our founders, provides care, education and program support to encourage a full and vibrant life for all whom we serve.
Whether it’s a new community-based program to increase access or education or an associate in a time of need, this fund continues the legacy of compassion that the Daughters of Charity created so many years ago. Last year alone, the Daughters of Charity Fund was called into action several times:
When severe and sudden flooding in Ellicott City caused massive damage, it was the Saint Agnes Foundation’s Daughters of Charity Fund that donated $2,500 to help Howard County residents and businesses rebuild.
When nine of our associates faced hardships in their personal lives, it was the Daughters of Charity Fund which came to their aid. From paying emergency mortgages to stave off eviction, to paying utility bills so the family would continue to have running water and heat.
When Saint Agnes wanted to find a unique way to support its caregivers, it is this fund that allowed the Foundation to bring Schwartz Rounds to our team. This program offers healthcare providers a regularly scheduled time during their fast-paced work lives to openly and honestly discuss the social and emotional issues they face in caring for patients and families. In contrast to traditional medical rounds, where the focus is on the human dimension of medicine. Caregivers have an opportunity to share their experiences, thoughts and feelings on thought-provoking topics drawn from actual patient cases.
The Saint Agnes Foundation is proud to be able to support the community and associates in such a meaningful way, and thanks to the generous support of our donors we can continue this great work.
Orthopedic and Rehabilitation
The physicians at the Orthopedic and Spine Institute at Saint Agnes Hospital are some of the region’s most experienced. They utilize the latest technology, techniques and procedures to treat patients – particularly in the fields of joint replacement and minimally invasive spine surgery, thus drastically reducing pain and recovery time.
The Orthopedic and Spine Institute at Saint Agnes Hospital is known across Maryland for top-notch care. Our goal is simple: to return our patients to normal function as quickly and safely as possible. To reach this goal, the medical professionals at Saint Agnes enlist a comprehensive, leading-edge approach to the prevention, assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of orthopedic (bone, muscle and joint) and spine-related injuries.
Our team of orthopedic surgeons, nurses, physician assistants, rehabilitation specialists and medical support personnel works with each patient’s primary care physician to develop a treatment program specific to that patient. By combining extensive clinical expertise with a compassionate, caring treatment philosophy, we created a program known for its quality of care. Here, you’ll benefit from the best, most advanced treatment around.
